As discussed in The Hompes Method book, the diligent work of the US Environmental Protection Agency and Environmental Working Group have clearly shown that everyone is carrying toxins in their bodies.
These toxins include:
- Heavy metals – arsenic, lead, mercury, aluminium, cadmium and others.
- Volatile solvents
- Plastics – BPA, phthalates
- Organophosphate pesticides
- Chlorinated pesticides
It’s not a matter of if you’re toxic, but how toxic you are and whether your toxic load is causing any of the symptoms and health challenges you’re currently experiencing.
As well as having direct, toxic effects on the body, these chemicals cause inflammation and oxidative stress, processes which are now known to underpin ALL disease.
The toxins tend to interfere with four main areas of physiology:
- Your immune system
- Your endocrine system (hormone system)
- Your neurological system (nerves)
- Energy production in your cells.
Some of the primary symptoms of toxicity are:
- Chemical sensitivity
- Memory loss
- Numbness and tingling in hands and feet
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Loss of appetite
It’s quite tough to know in specific cases whether these symptoms are due to toxins, hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies or infections.
Toxins can cause hormone imbalances, deplete nutrients and sabotage your immune system’s ability to get rid of infections.
As I always say, unless we test, we are just guessing why you don’t feel well!
Using blood, hair, stool and urine tests, it’s possible to see which toxins are in your body, and to some extent these tests can provide information on how much of each toxin might be present.
Whilst this is useful, it does not tell you whether and how the toxins might be interfering with your unique, individual metabolism.
However a straightforward, single urine test can immediately tell you whether the likes of mercury, arsenic or lead are blocking metabolic pathways in your body.
Porphyrins are proteins involved in the formation of heme. Heme is essential for the proper function of many proteins in your body including oxygen transport, energy production, and detoxification. Proper porphyrin production is also essential for your body’s capacity to detoxify toxins.
Various toxins can interfere with porphyrin production, as shown below.
The diagram shows how three toxins – arsenic, lead and mercury – can interfere with the function of your cells.
Using a single urine test that you provide in the comfort and convenience of your home, you can gauge whether your porphyrin levels are ideal.
Porphyrin testing can identify:
- The level of biochemical damage caused by toxic exposure
- Mercury’s effect on your body
- Progress during detoxification therapy
- The toxicity of therapeutic drugs
- Possible differentiation of specific heavy metal toxicity (arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, etc.)
Specific porphyrin elevations may indicate metabolic blockages caused by individual toxins, as the table, below indicates:
As you can see, the effects of aluminium, arsenic, lead, mercury and other toxins such as dioxin can be evaluated using the porphyrin test.
In Hompes Method, we always make sure the basics are in place before trying to add specific processes or cleanses.
Without the basics, there is no foundation on which to place cleansing and other “fancy” programs. It’s actually impossible to detoxify your body unless you:
- Avoid the toxins in the first place
- Eat a clean and healthy diet
- Ensure your digestive system is functioning as efficiently as possible
- Optimize your nutrient status
These steps alone will boost your body’s ability to “dump” toxins.
Once toxic effects have been identified using porphyrin testing and other tests in the Hompes Method Toolkit, I help you identify where your toxic exposures are coming so you can avoid them.
Using Hompes Method Basics, I then help you optimize your food intake and energy production.
Where necessary, I then design a bespoke detoxification plan for you to follow, including diet changes and targeted supplements that help to pull toxins out of your body at an accelerated rate.
Before commencing any detoxification process, it’s also very important to ensure your liver is functioning properly and has the capacity to deal with more toxins. An organic acids test provides excellent information on the nutritional status of your liver (and to a lesser extent, your kidneys).
